SWIFT-CARE

Study based on a pioneering method in Spain to reduce food waste in hospitals

WHAT IS SWIFT-CARE?

The SWIFT-CARE project consists of carrying out a comprehensive study on food waste (MA, for its acronym in Catalan) through all stages of food at the Vall d’Hebron Hospital in Barcelona and a direct quantification method, with the objective of implementing measures, and finally, analysing their good implementation.

OBJETIVES

The main objectives of the project are:

WHY?

Although they are present in some EU countries, food waste studies in hospitals in our country are practically unexplored. SWIFT-CARE aims to change things, proposing an exhaustive study with a relevant quantification for each type of consumer (patient, healthcare staff and external client) and waste generation flow (pre-processing, processing and plate) with the aim of solving the problem in a more general and realistic way.

Furthermore, at a socioeconomic level, Law 3/2020, of March 11, on the prevention of food losses and waste, imposes obligations on the food supply chain that involve the implementation of measures to combat MA and quantification of commercialized food.

METHODOLOGY

To ensure the greatest efficiency, the project will be divided into four phases: (1) problem identification through interviews, focus groups and surveys with stakeholders; (2) pre-intervention quantification of MA; (3) design and implementation of intervention strategies, and, finally, (4) post-intervention quantification to determine the impact of the implemented measures.

DURATION

January 1, 2024 – December 31, 2024

The SWIFT-CARE project responds to the following Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):

THE ROLE OF CREDA

TASK

CREDA coordinates the management of the SWIFT-CARE project and is responsible for carrying out the entire study through:

  1. Identification of the problem.
  2. Pre-intervention quantification.
  3. Design and implementation of strategies.
  4. Post-intervention quantification.
