In accordance with the Food Law initiated by the previous Govern, the Minister of Agricultura, Ramaderia, Pesca i Alimentació, Òscar Ordeig, has presented the Food Strategy of Catalonia 2025-2028, which highlights that 50% of the food in school canteens, prisons, Catalan hospitals and other public administrations should be locally sourced.
Until now, only 20% of food was km 0. With the intention of making a change, the minister assured that “doubling the presence of local food in public administrations will generate an impact of 100 million euros, and will also educate and raise awareness in society.”
Thus, the main focus of action is schools, where the Department of Agriculture will implement a pilot test of food training in around twenty Catalan centers. The objective of this proposal is for students “to be able to make decisions about healthy, sustainable and responsible eating.“
Other measures to be implemented
The Food Strategy of Catalonia 2025-2028 also includes other measures to improve agriculture and livestock technically and digitally, with tools such as smart labels. In addition, the plan establishes the creation of a rural agri-food observatory to centralize data from the sector and promote sustainable production models that ensure the balance of the food chain.
