The Departament d’Agricultura, Ramaderia, Pesca i Alimentació is promoting a Plan for the valorization of game meat in Catalonia with the aim of increasing its consumption, as an opportunity to take advantage of the economic potential of a renewable natural resource and promote the local bioeconomy.
The aim is to help control overpopulation of hunting species, such as roe deer or wild boar, involved in traffic accidents, agricultural damage or disease transmission. Thus, the Departament d’Agricultura, Ramaderia, Pesca i Alimentació aims to maintain the balance of ecosystems, generate local income and preserve part of Catalan rural culture.
According to the Govern, to encourage the consumption and marketing of game meat, two work axes will be structured: one to improve the collection, transport and circulation of meat pieces; and another aimed at informational actions.
With the intention of reducing its density in the environment, during 2024 the Department has allocated 931.000 euros in aid for hunting and the collection centres of this meat so that it can reach the handling establishments, which is where the meat is conditioned to be sold fresh or in the form of processed products such as cold cuts.
Catalonia has 9 logistics points where 50% of the game pieces managed are sold outside Catalonia, mainly to Spanish companies. The other 50% is managed locally and 90% is exported to Europe.
Within this plan, the Govern has designed a series of actions to improve society’s perception of hunting.
