During the inauguration of the new Es im-perfecte production centre of the Fundació Espigoladors, the Minister of Agricultura, Ramaderia, Pesca i Alimentació, Òscar Ordeig, announced that the diagnosis of food waste in households in Catalonia in 2024 shows that 21,56 kg/year per inhabitant is currently wasted, on average.

This study was commissioned by CREDA and IRTA, with the aim of evaluating and quantifying the economic and environmental impact of food losses and waste in Catalan households. According to Ordeig, “this waste could feed 274,948 people for a year, which would cover the food needs of 14.08% of the Catalan population at risk of poverty.

The Government’s intention is to prevent food waste throughout the production chain through a strategic plan that will be presented at the beginning of 2026, with the aim of collecting total data, broken down by products and links, and thus knowing the reality of the situation in Catalonia.

The Estratègia Alimentària de Catalunya 2025-2028 is a tool developed by the Government to accelerate the transition of the agri-food system towards a more sustainable, transformative future based on the circular economy, which is framed within the Pla Estratègic de l’Alimentació de Catalunya (PEAC).
